- Federal bank regulators are issuing new guidelines to banks designed to encourage them to continue lending practices to creditworthy customers–an effort to make them aware that the billions in bailout money provided to them is there to help struggling borrowers and improve the overall economy. In other words, they ought to rethink the week-long Carribean cruise bonus for the fantasy football league…
 Treasury Secretary Henry PaulsonW announced that the $700 billion government bailout plan will not be used to buy troubled assets–like mortgages–and would instead turn to financial markets supplying consumer credit for products like credit cards, auto loans and student loans, with Paulson stating that supporting this market is vital for lending and growth. This change could be due to plans by mortgages lenders to offer their own relief to homeowners at risk of foreclosure, or one too many holes in the dike for one litte boy’s fingers…- House Speaker Nancy PelosiW is leading the congressional charge to provide financial help for the auto industry, who are struggling with the double burden of poor sales and tighter credit. Some lawmakers worry that extending help to individual companies opens the floodgates to any and all comers–sorta like the argument, "if you help one poor starving person, you’ve got to help them all"…
 A Connecticut judge’s ruling this morning has cleared the way for the state to legalize same-sex marriages, with several couples planning ceremonies within hours in New Haven. This was just the city where the court decision was handed down–Rosie O'DonnellW isn’t planning to relocate here…- A federal task force charged with dealing with flight delay policies has approved some voluntary guidelines but offer no fixed limit that would permit passengers to leave planes stranded on tarmacs. I wouldn’t worry–airlines who are already charging for checked luggage, aisle seats, meals and carry-on pets will be more than happy to do something for their customers out of the goodness of their hearts…
- A new Associated PressW poll has found that the public wants the tax cuts promised during presidential campaign, but seem to be willing to wait while president-elect Obama works to tackle the economy first. I’m gonna guess that Joe the Plumber wasn’t part of this study–but I don’t think he’s taking that many calls these days…

- Congressional leaders and the White House completed negotiations on the president’s $700 billion rescue plan late Sunday night, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi saying, "This isn’t about a bailout of Wall Street, it’s a buy-in, so that we can turn our economy around." So am I the only one a liitle freaked over Pelosi using poker lingo to explain how they’re making everything better?
 Both John McCain and Barack Obama Sunday used carefully crafted words to show their support of the financial rescue plan just completed by the White House and Congressional leaders, with Obama saying he’s inclined to back it, "because I think Main Street is now at stake", and McCain stating, "The option of doing nothing is simply not an acceptable option." McCain running mate Sarah Palin was also asked for her assessment, but she was apparently late for Girls Night Out at TGI Friday’s…- As the world mourned the death of movie icon Paul Newman over the weekend, close associates of his said that he wanted to be remembered most for the establishment of the "Hole In The Wall" camps he started for children with life-threatening illnesses, and that he wanted the charitable work of his Newman’s Own food company to continue after his death. We certainly won’t forget all his gifts to us–including Brick, Hud, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy, Henry Gondorf, Frank Galvin, and Fast Eddie Felson…
- A Chinese space mission returned to Earth Sunday and its crew of three astronauts hailed as national heroes after they completed the country’s first spacewalk, a significant step toward China’s ambitious plan to build a space station and land a man on the moon. Government officials insisted all the astronauts had proof they met the program’s mininum age requirements…
 Hurricane Kyle spent the weekend threatening Maine with its first Category 1 storm in 17 years–but instead delivering little more than a serious soaking to a few Downeast communities before weakening to to a tropical storm and making landfall in Canada’s Nova Scotia. I guess the biggest concern was the wild blueberry crop and the associated shortage of blueberry pies, ruining a perfectly good Maine lobster dinner…- A conservative legal group plans to send the IRS sermons from nearly three dozen clergy members who made pointed political references to candidates from the pulpit Sunday in order to force a legal challenge to a rule that such activities can risk the church’s tax-exempt status. I understand most of the homilies were deemed adequate; however, a few had to be discarded due to their apparent "Vote Pat Robertson for God On Earth" campaign effort

- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has warned the Justice Department that she will file a civil suit if they don’t launch a grand jury investigation into whether a current and former member of the Bush administration should be prosecuted for contempt of Congress. However, she promises a nice hug to anyone who cooperates…
- If you get a letter from the IRS next month, don’t panic–130 million households will be receiving them as a reminder about their eligibility for tax rebate payments that begin in May. Of course, it your letter includes a photo of you in the Cayman Islands with a bag of cash, it’s probably something else…

- In what has to be one of life’s true miracles, a newborn baby girl in India fell through a toilet on a moving train and onto the tracks, yet survived after a two hour search. The really good news is that the odds are so slim for someone falling off a train through a toilet, she’ll never have to worry about that again…
