Arizona senator John McCain officially became the Republican presidential nominee Wednesday night, and Alaska governor and running mate Sarah Palin told the Republican National Convention that "there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change." She then pointed out a picture of McCain and asked someone on the podium, "that’s him, right?"…
- As New Orleans residents begin returning home after Hurricane Gustav, President Bush told emergency workers there that the government’s response to it was "excellent", but that the need to get electricity re-established is a major priority now. He added later that not only was it essential in order to restore basic energy services, but that it’s also NFL Week 1…
- Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick resigned his office Thursday and pled guilty to a pair of felony obstruction charges related to his attempt to cover up an affair with his former chief of staff, all part of a deal that includes 4 months in jail and a million dollars in restitution. It ends a 7-month ordeal where Kilpatrick steadfastly denied his guilt and calls to step down, only to cave in once overwhelming evidence came to light–as if something like this had never happened before…
- As Tropical Storm Hanna is set to strike the North Carolina coast by Saturday, Hurricane Ike has been upgraded to Category 4 as it swirls in the Atlantic–with forecasters at present unsure of when and where it will strike. I understand that Haiti is requesting to be left alone–at least until they can actually get their country above sea level…
Convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff told a federal judge that "I am not a bad man" and pleaded for leniency in sentencing Thursday, where he could receive as many as 11 years in prison for his corruption of Capitol Hill lawmakers. No–he definitely looks pretty bad here…
- A new study has concluded that over half of US companies plan to keep health care costs down by raising employees’ deductibles, co-pays, or out-of-pocket spending limits. Of course, those that actually hike all three will be eligible for the insurance industry’s annual "Trifecta Award"…

- Hurricane Gustav was fortunately not all it was cracked up to be, making landfall near New Orleans as a Category 1 storm Monday but losing steam rapidly and then weakening to just a tropical storm by day’s end. A combination of improved levees and an orderly evacuation of practically all the area’s residents left little opportunity for Gustav to do any real damage–other than to blow some Mardi Gras beads on some less-than-worthy recipients…
- The Republican National Convention opened Monday with far less fanfare than planned due to the potential damage that Hurricane Gustav might cause, with President Bush staying away to be near disaster management leaders and presumptive nominee John McCain working with volunteers in Ohio to pack supplies for flood victims. I heard that Mitt Romney tried to sneak in and get the delegates still there to nominate him, but they put him on a bus back to Utah…
- The lawyer who vetted Sarah Palin, John McCain’s choice as vice-president, says that she voluntarily disclosesd both her 17-year-old daughter’s pregnancy and a DUI arrest of her husband 20 years ago. If this clip is any indication, McCain is much more interested in some of Palin’s other disclosures…

- Attorneys for former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales disclosed that he mishandled highly classified notes about a secret counterterror program–but not on purpose. This is probably a “test balloon” for an upcoming disclosure that Gonzales accidentally fired those US Attorneys after confusing them with Democrats…
- Zoo Atlanta, who Saturday welcomed the first baby panda born to a US zoo so far this year, placed the tiny butter-stick-sized cub in an incubator for closer observation Monday. Zoo officials say it was due to concern that the mother might be rejecting the cub–not to huddle with its agent to negotiate merchandising rights…
- Hundreds, perhaps thousands of Chicago public school students will be skipping their first day of classes–and boarding over a hundred buses destined for a suburban district that spends almost twice per student than Chicago Public Schools does, all to draw attention to the effect such a financial disparity has on the quality of their education. They will hopefully learn that the most powerful and persuasive tool to separate money from those that don’t want to let go isn’t a gun–it’s a camera…

- Investigators say DNA from the anthrax scare that killed 7 people in 2001 helped lead them to an Army lab and the man they believe sent the poison-laced letters. His suicide shortly after being identified as a suspect was a big disappointment–not only will he not be able to explain why he did it, but he won’t be able to receive the kind of punishment he deserves for what he did to his country…
President Bush leaves today for a trip to Asia, where he wil speak wih leaders in South Korea and Thailand before arriving in China to witness the Opening Ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Beijing. I understand that he’s pretty excited, but also disappointed he won’t be throwing out the first pitch…
Texas has been warned to be ready for Tropical Storm Eduoard, which formed in the Gulf Of Mexico Sunday and is likely to graduate to a hurricane when it makes landfall Tuesday along the state’s eastern shore bordering Louisiana. The opposite side of the state’s shore was affected by Hurricane Dolly almost 2 weeks ago–so do you call that equal opportunity destruction or what?
- Al-Qaida has confirmed that of one of its top commanders was killed–the individual believed to have trained the suicide bombers who attacked the USS Cole in 2000. CBS News also reported that Al-Qaida’s #2 and Osama bin Laden’s top lieutenant was killed at the same time. I certainly don’t believe that the taking of anyone’s life should ever be celebrated, but I am nonetheless feeling that whole "two-for-one bargain" concept …
- Nobel prize-winning author Alexander Solzhenitsyn died of heart failure late Sunday at the age of 89. He fearlessly recounted his own experiences in Soviet Union labor camps over several books in the 1960’s and ’70’s–and lived long enough to see the end of everything he worte about…
