  • Saudi Arabia said Sunday that they will produce more crude oil if the global market needs it, but a summit it called between oil producing and consuming nations failed to agree on the central factors driving prices to record highs.  I don’t understand why they all can’t see it’s because nobody knows what happened to Tony Soprano…
  • The recent flooding in the Midwest will create an additional financial burden besides the massive cost of rebuilding and renovating countless cities and towns–acres of wiped-out corn and soybean crops, which will drive up prices of meat and dairy products.  That’s nothing–I can only imagine what the cost of my soy sauce-flavored popcorn will be…
  • Some Republicans say they’re concerned that former congressman Bob Barr’s Libertarian party bid for president may cost them enough votes to lose the election.  Maybe Barack Obama has a running mate after all…
  • The opposition leader running against long-time Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe has withdrawn from Friday’s election, saying his party has been such a target of brutality by Mugabe’s police and other forces that the planned run-off vote between the two would be a sham.  Mugabe reportedly plans to go ahead with the election anyway, since he obviously wants to be fair…
  • Italian premiere Silvio Berluscomi has undertaken an uphill battle–convincing the Vatican to permit divorced and remarried Catholics–like Berluscomi himself–to be able to receive Communion.  Yeah, that’ll happen–right after they OK the use of contraceptives…
  • Retired NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw was named the interim host of Meet The Press, where he will take over for the late Tim Russert, who died suddenly June 13.  Brokaw will fill in until after the November elections, giving network executives time to find the right permanent candidate–whoever won’t mind standing in Russert’s unbelievable shadow…

  • John McCain continued with his energy proposals yesterday, calling for the construction of 45 new nuclear reactors by 2030 and the promise of federal money to, quote, "make clean coal a reality".  That sounds like an awful lot of work–all that scrubbing…
  • Barack Obama said yesterday that as president, he would bring Osama bin Laden to justice in a way that wouldn’t allow him to become a martyr.  It’s an excellent idea–it’s just too bad Johnnie Cochran passed away..
  • A new study has found that gastric bypass surgery–primarily used to treat obesity–not only reduces heart disease and diabetes, but dramatically decreases the chance of several types of cancer.  That’s amazing, but can it take on a real challenge–like curing the 6 cheeseburger lunch?
  • Conservative Republicans are working to slow down the passage of a housing rescue bill designed to help homeowners avoid foreclosure, saying it would, "reward stupidity on the part of people who bought homes they couldn’t afford".  That is an ideal strategy to capture the wealthy, greedy, uncaring robber-baron vote…
  • A pregnant earthquake survivor in China who was trapped in the rubble of her apartment building for over 2 days gave birth to a girl she named "Ai"–the Chinese word for "love".  She should have some nicknames too –like "Miracle" and "Blessing" and "Olympics Symbol"…

  • The recent salmonella outbreak has ratched up a Congressional investigation into claims that labs responsible for testing food entering the US routinely and repeatedly test food until a clean result is obtained.  So we’re basically talking a whole "if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again" deal, right?
  • Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he has invited both Afghanistan and Pakistan to join a US investigation into an airstrike that Pakistani officials claim took the lives of 11 of their troops.  Those folks would be smart to go along–Gates is likely to fire them, too…
  • The Supreme Court dealt a major blow to Bush administration policies when it ruled that Guantanamo detainees are entitled to rights of "habeas corpus"–a prisoners’ right to know the legal justification and factual basis for their detention.  I wonder if Dick Cheney will accuse the Constitution of giving aid and comfort to the emeny…
  • FEMA reportedly gave away $85 million in donated items and household supplies originally intended for Katrina victims–at least partly because the charitable group coordinating much of the effort to help victims was not officially registered with a state surplus agency.  I really hope this bunch of bureaucrats have their resumes updated…
  • Senate Republican leaders say it is likely that their best-case scenario for the fall election is that they will lose three to four seats.  Their plan is to make a big push in 2010–when they hope there’s a President McCain with an approval rating above 40…
  • A California high school is defending its actions after it recently informed students that a number of their classmates had been killed in weekend car wrecks, then later told the shocked and saddened group "never mind"–it was all a scared-straight exercise to dramatize the dangers of drinking and driving.  Many were outraged, certain that it was their place to manipulate the feelings of adults…

  • The slumping economy has slowed down another industry–divorces, which are declining as couples looking to split up find that selling their home is far from easy or profitable.  It could spawn a new version of a ’70’s hit–"Equity Will Keep Us Together"…
  • The search for Barack Obama’s vice-presidential nominee will reportedly extend to the military as well as current and former elected officials.  I wonder if Hillary Clinton is scrambling to get herself an emergency Navy commission…
  • Senate Republicans managed to block a bill that would have imposed a windfall profits tax on oil companies, claiming that it would have no effect on gas prices.  That may be true, but it certainly would have shrunk a figure or maybe two off some executives’ eight-figure earnings…
  • John McCain’s campaign is refuting rumors that they declined to meet with evangelist Billy Graham, with both sides insisting that no invitation had even been extended.  I’m wondering when evangelist Pat Robertson will insist McCain would have known if he hadn’t let God’s call go straight to voicemail…
  • Weekend storms in Wisonsin that brought torrents of rain flooded a popular lake so badly that it burst its banks and emptied into a nearby river, leaving it nearly empty.  On the upside, it’s become a great fishing spot…
  • Truckers protesting Spain’s skyrocketing fuel prices by blocking highways there yesterday disrupted shipments of many staples, causing shortages among many food vendors.  It’s even affected their traditional "running of the bulls"–it’s really become more of a meander…

  • The IRS reports that up to 350,000 Americans did not receive the $300 per child refund due them as part of the economic stimulus payments going out now, due to taxpayers’ errors and problems with commercial tax preparation software.  That could explain my stimulus payment of $147,000
  • Barack Obama accused President Bush of "a false political attack" when Bush suggested in a speech in Israel that there were those in his country who would appease terrorists–what Obama took to mean his comments that he would meet with leaders of nations like Iran and North Korea.  He only wanted to see if they could convince Hillary Clinton to quit
  • Congressional Republicans ignored veto threats from President Bush and sided with Democrats to pass a $290 billion farm bill that increases food aid for the needy and to call for the temporarily halt of the government’s daily oil purchases for our emergency reserve.  When your own party is turning its back on you, it’s time to start warming up the memoirs machine…
  • Michael Connor Humphreys, who not only played the the younger version of Forrest Gump in the Oscar-winning movie but  followed his characters’ footsteps into the Army three years ago, will end his enlistment next month and return to movies.  I’m pretty sure there isn’t a Forrest Gump: The Braces Years planned…
